A duel meaning lies in these lyrics. On the surface, the song could be about someone living with the knowledge of a murder covered up and gotten away with. In reality, the true meaning is that of our own punishment taken by Christ on the cross, and the "things better left unsaid" are our sins before God. Even though they may be "locked up" in our minds and remembered by us, God casts them away and remembers them no more.
